Description:
Daughter of the River Market is a tribute to the Black women who walked Savannah’s River Street—barefoot or bowed, invisible to history but essential to it. She appears here as a ghost, but she is not gone. Her form, laser-engraved into natural wood, rises with grace and stillness, stepping forward from shadow into memory.
She does not haunt. She returns.
Set against a vivid pink backdrop, her presence glows—feminine, sacred, and fully self-possessed. The pink is not softness—it’s reverence. It is the color of memory held with love. It is what remains when time fades and truth survives.
Created by R.V. Monroe, the collaborative vision of Robert and Venice Monroe, this piece honors ancestral presence in both form and process. Robert brings technical craft and deep-rooted storytelling shaped by Southern soil. Venice shapes the composition with grace, balance, and sacred emotion—ensuring she walks not just in wood, but in spirit.
Daughter of the River Market speaks not of erasure, but of return. She is every Black woman whose steps were never recorded, but whose walk still echoes through the brick-lined streets of Savannah. Her body built the market. Her soul built the city.
